_________
A) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS…
VirusDetective 5.x and VirusBlockade II 2.x require a Macintosh Plus (or later) running System 6.0.2 (or later).
_________
B) INSTALLATION FOR SYSTEM 6.X (STARTING AT 6.0.2)…
VirusDetective is a desk accessory (DA) for the Macintosh. To install VirusDetective on a System 6.X Macintosh, use the Font/DA Mover (by Apple) to copy VirusDetective into your System file which is located in your System Folder. To install desk accessories, you will find complete instructions on how to use the Font/DA Mover in the Apple manual that came with your Macintosh; it comes with every Macintosh Apple sells. If you have any questions, call us for technical support and we will guide you through the Font/DA Mover process step-by-step.
If you want to use one of the Font/Desk Accessory utilities such as Suitcase II or MasterJuggler, follow their instructions on how to add a desk accessory to your existing desk accessory collection.
_________
C) INSTALLATION FOR SYSTEM 7.0 (AND AFTER)…
VirusDetective is a desk accessory (DA) for the Macintosh. To install it on a System 7.0 (and later) Macintosh:
Step 1: drag the VirusDetective desk accessory icon (which has a suitcase icon) into the CLOSED System Folder. Release the mouse button;
Step 2: a dialog box will appear that asks: ‘Desk accessories need to be stored in the Apple Menu Items folder in order to appear in the Apple menu. [Do you want to] put “VirusDetective®” into the Apple Menu Items folder?’; click the “OK” button.
You can put the VirusDetective desk accessory file in any location you desire – however, if you want to use VirusBlockade, place the VirusDetective desk accessory file (or an alias to the VirusDetective DA file) into the Apple Menu Items folder located in the System Folder.
_________
D) INSTALL THESE FONTS…
VirusDetective uses the following fonts. Install BEFORE using VirusDetective because things won’t look right unless you do:
Helvetica 10, 12,18;
Chicago 12;
Geneva 9, 12, 18.
_________
E) CUSTOM ICON (IN COLOR) FOR SYSTEM 7.0 (AND AFTER)…
Due to a bug in the Finder of System 7.0 (which hopefully will be fixed in a future update), you will have to rebuild the desktop file on your startup disk in order for VirusDetective’s custom icon to appear. To rebuild the desktop, hold down the Option and Command keys and start up your Macintosh. Hold both keys down until a dialog box (regarding the startup disk) appears saying: ‘Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk “startup disk name”? Comments in info windows will be lost.’; click “OK”. You will get one of these dialog boxes for each disk. If you want to rebuild the desktop of only the startup disk, only click “OK” on the startup disk, not on any of the other disks.
NOTE: If you do not want to lose your comments in the info windows, use a hard disk (it does not work with a floppy disk) that doesn’t have info windows with comments; copy VirusDetective onto that hard disk and rebuild its desktop. Finally, copy VirusDetective to your startup disk, along with its custom icon. If you are a registered used and cannot use another hard disk, send us a blank floppy disk and we will put an “iconized” version of VirusDetective on it for you.
_________
F) DOCUMENTATION / INSTRUCTIONS: INTERNAL ‘HELP’ FILES VS. EXTERNAL TEXT FILE…
In order to keep the instruction manual from getting separated from the VirusDetective desk accessory, we have changed the format of the documentation from external to internal. It used to be that the documentation was an external text document. Now the documentation is contained in several Help files internal to VirusDetective – this way the documentation is always accessible to you. VirusDetective’s Main Window has access to the ‘About’ file and the Main Window ‘Help’ file; the Options and Search Strings dialog boxes each have their own ‘Help’ files.
_________
G) CREATE YOUR OWN INSTRUCTION MANUAL ON PAPER…
To create a print file to print an instruction manual on paper, first note that each of the four dialog boxes (one ‘About’ file and three ‘Help’ files) has a “Help -> Clipboard” (or “Text -> Clipboard”) button. When you click the “Help -> Clipboard” button, the entire text of that particular file gets copied into the Clipboard; paste the contents of the Clipboard into your chosen word processing (or desktop publishing) application. We suggest you add the contents of each file to the end of the previous file. If you are printing on a laser printer (since this document is in Geneva), change the entire document to a laser font. Make sure all your print settings are the way you want them. Then print on paper.
If the word processing program you choose ‘understands’ the “standard formatted text Clipboard” (for example, MacWrite II does; Microsoft Word 4.0 does not), all the text formatting (font, font size, bold, italics, underline, etc.) that exists in the internal files will be RETAINED. Otherwise, you’ll lose all the text formatting, and be left with ONLY text.
_________
H) SCREEN SHOTS OF VIRUSDETECTIVE’S CURSOR, MAIN WINDOW AND DIALOG BOXES…
In case you want to compile your own reference manual on paper, INCLUDING GRAPHICS of the cursor, Main Window and dialog boxes, for your convenience, we have furnished screen shots of VirusDetective’s icon, Main Window, and several dialog boxes. The screen shots are in PICT format; if you use a color monitor, some of the screen shots will show up in color.
The screen shots are located in a scrapbook document called “VirusDetective® Scrapbook”. If you use Apple’s Scrapbook to view “VirusDetective® Scrapbook”, first rename the file to “Scrapbook File” and put it in your System folder.
